Electronic devices require a power supply either from the main power supply or from the electrical batteries. In this era of advancing technology the increased battery size is the main problem that our electronics industry now faces. Here Paper Battery becomes the ultimate solution.

Paper battery is basically a device which can act both as a capacitor and as a battery. It is basically formed by combination of cellulose with carbon nanotubes (CNT).It consists of infusion of CNT with paper consisting of an ionic liquid as an electrolyte. It can act as both a high energy battery and a super-capacitor, combining two components that are separate in traditional electronics. This combination allows the battery to provide long-term steady power production. These non-toxic paper battery have the potential to power the next generation of electronics, medical devices and hybrid vehicles allowing for radical new designs and medical technologies.

The properties of cellulose and CNT are the great benefits in paper battery design and development. They can be reused and recycled by methods of existing paper recycling. The paper batteries are rechargeable. There are no leakage problems,as no leaky fluids are used. Output voltage can be customised due to the fact that CNT concentration can be varied and stacking can be changed. It is bio compactible and hence they can be easily adopted by our immune system. It is durable and can be operated in wide temperature ranges. It is does not overheat even under extreme conditions due to the low resistance characteristics.Output voltage is customisable as CNT concentration can be varied and stacking and slicing can be changed. Some of the disadvantages of these paper battery are that due to low shear strength these batteries can be easily torn, they are very harmful to human beings when inhaled and the cost of production of CNT is very high.

Scientists have now come across with a breakthrough in battery technology creating light weight flexible power storing cells entirely made out of paper and engineered polymers. This paper batteries are completely biodegradable and since Americans throw away more than three billion batteries every year, according to the EPA, this is a huge leap forward in clean energy. According to the scientists this hybrid paper battery exhibited a much higher power to cost ratio than all previously reported paper based microbial batteries.

The paper-like quality of the battery combined with the structure of the nanotubes embedded within gives them light weight and low cost, offering potential for portable electronics, aircraft, automobiles and toys. This non- toxic flexible paper batteries have the potential to power the next generation of electronics and medical devices and hybrid vehicles allowing for radical new designs and medical technologies.
